Resident choreographer Alejandro Cerrudo’s magical One Thousand Pieces – the company’s first-ever full-evening work – was created in celebration of Hubbard Street Dance Chicago’s 35th anniversary in 2012. Cerrudo’s velvety spectacle for 24 dancers, with music by Philip Glass, was inspired by Marc Chagall’s America Windows, stunning panels of glowing stained glass donated to the Art Institute of Chicago in 1977 – the same year Hubbard Street was founded – to commemorate America’s bicentennial. One Thousand Pieces is a fast-moving onslaught of gorgeous, classically pure dance extolling the importance of creativity, cross-disciplinary collaboration and innovation. It’s also a fluid and eye-poppingly brilliant testament to the power of contemporary dance.
