Italy’s sun-drenched landscapes and joie de vivre of its people prompted Mendelssohn’s spirited symphony, one of the most beloved in the repertoire (he himself referred to it once as “blue sky in A major”). You may feel like joining in the last movement saltarello, a rapid 16th century Neapolitan dance of skips and jumps. Also inspired by Italy, Stravinsky’s delightful ballet suite of re-imagined 18th century scores recalls the story of a sly commedia dell’arte character. Our principal violist and principal cellist join in Canadian composer Malcolm Forsyth’s inspiring Double Concerto.
