Photo Flash: Rashomon Plays Mad Cow Theater

By: Jun. 10, 2011

Mad Cow Theatre announces Rashomon, playing June 17 through July 10, 2011 in it's intimate Stage Right.

Nominated for three Tony awards, Rashomon is a stunning examination of truth and human nature. Based on the Japanese tale of the samurai, the bandit and the woman, this intimate play's impact is driven by the art of storytelling.

One thousand years ago in a bamboo forest outside Kyoto, an outlaw kills a samurai and ravishes his wife - or are things really so black and white? With four witnesses offering conflicting versions of events, how does one know right from wrong? A penetrating look into the human psyche, Rashomon is an enduring theatrical work that illustrates the power of perception.

Based on stories by Japanese author Ryunosuke Akutagawa, Rashomon was first brought to life in 1950 in an Academy Award-winning film by legendary director Akira Kurosawa. Reinterpreted by Fay and Michael Kanin as a stage drama, Rashomon premiered on Broadway on January 27, 1959. Even decades later, ongoing fascination with this story told from varying perspectives has made the work as fresh today as its stage premiere over 50 years ago.

Michael Marinaccio (The Heiress, Love Song) will direct Rashomon. The cast includes Ryan Gigliotti as The Samurai, Viet Nguyen as the Priest, Terrence Yip as the Woodcutter, Tommy Keesling as the Wigmaker, Roger Floyd as the Bandit, and Selena Ayumi Bass as the Samurai's Wife.

The creative team includes William Elliott as Scenic Designer, Erin Miner as Lighting Designer, and John Valines as Sound Designer.

Tickets are available online at madcowtheatre.com and by calling the Mad Cow Theatre box office at 407.297.8788 x1.
