Lake Worth Playhouse Presents ALMOST, MAINE, Now thru 9/25

By:

The Lake Worth Playhouse will present Almost, Maine, a live theatre event in the intimate, black box Studio Theatre, the Stonzek Theatre.

This critically acclaimed story presents the loss of love as dark as a cloudy, winter night and sets your heart to fly as love shines brightly as stars over the little town of Almost, Maine.

On a cold, clear, moonless night in the middle of winter, all is not quite what it seems in the remote, mythical town of Almost, Maine. As the northern lights hover in the star-filled sky above, Almost's residents find themselves falling in and out of love in unexpected and often hilarious ways. Knees are bruised. Hearts are broken. But The Bruises heal, and the hearts mend - almost - in this delightful midwinter night's dream.

The play takes place as a series of vignettes with each scene focusing on a different aspect of love. At first glance it can appear to be too cliché, almost too cute. But enveloped in the intimate black box environment, you discover certain truths and depths that you will find yourself having experienced at some time in your life.

"It has been crucial to approach this play with complete honesty --- no funny Maine accents, cutesy caricatures etc. -- real people, real emotions, real love." -Patty Goodrich-Storch, Director

A unique approach was taken when casting: the director asked of the original cast to choose one character they wanted to play and the director chose a character that she thought would be a stretch for them as an actor, or something for which they wouldn't be cast.

Almost, Maine is a true small theatre, ensemble effort. A cast member is writing the musical score. The director has been open and receptive to staging suggestions, set suggestions...creating an environment that it is a communal show, honing the craft and art as much as it is for the audience.

In the limited space the set is small, moveable and creatively versatile. For instance, established is the convention that if a set piece is not used in one scene that placing it flush to the wall or turned around means it is out of that scene.

Tonight, September 20-25, 2pm, 8pm. Tickets, $15, can be purchased through the Lake Worth Playhouse Box Office at 561-586-6410 or online at lakeworthplayhouse.org.
