Yo-Yo Ma Returns To The Lied Center For One-Night-Only Performance On December 4

Yo-Yo Ma, a recipient of the National Medal of the Arts and the Presidential Medal of Freedom, brings more than four decades of performance, recording, and cultural advocacy to his return to the Lied Center.

With over 120 albums, 19 Grammy Awards, and performances for nine American presidents, Ma remains one of the most influential classical artists of his generation. He was previously honored by the Lied Center as its inaugural Artist of Distinction.

Ma’s career has long reflected his belief in the role of culture as a catalyst for connection. His recent initiative, Our Common Nature, focuses on the ways communities can reengage with the natural world as part of a shared future. The project follows The Bach Project, his 36-community, six-continent exploration of the cello suites paired with locally driven cultural programming, underscoring his interest in how music functions within civic life.

Born to Chinese parents in Paris, Ma began cello studies at age four and later continued his musical training in New York City before pursuing a liberal arts education. His international career has encompassed classical repertoire, cross-genre collaborations, community engagement work, and a dedication to expanding the reach of music as a shared human experience.
