Bluebarn Theatre Holds Auditions For DR. JEKYLL AND MR. HYDE 7/19, 7/20

BLUEBARN Theatre is holding auditions for its 21st season-opener, the chilling Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde, a new adaptation by Jeffrey Hatcher. Audition dates are Sunday, July 19 from 4pm to 6pm and Monday, July 20 from 6pm to 8pm. Needed are four men age 25 to 55 and two women ages 25 to 45. Auditions will be held at the Downtown Space, 614 S. 11th St. Auditions will also consist of cold readings from the script. Callbacks may be held at a later date if needed. BLUEBARN's Artistic Director, Susan Clement-Toberer directs this provocative adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson's classic thriller. Shows run October 1-17, 2009; Thursdays-Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 6 p.m.

Jeffrey Hatcher (Three Viewings, Scotland Road, Compleat Female Stage Beauty, Tuesdays with Morrie) presents a new and shocking version of Robert Louis Stevenson's classic tale of depravity, lust, love and horror. On the fog-bound streets of Victorian-era London, Henry Jekyll's experiments with exotic "powders and tinctures" have brought forth his other self-Edward Hyde, a sensualist and villain free to commit the sins Jekyll is too civilized to comprehend. When Hyde meets a woman who stirs his interest, Jekyll fears for her life and decides to end his experiments. But Hyde has other ideas, and so the two sides battle each other in a deadly game of cat-and-mouse to determine who shall be the master and who his slave with multiple Hydes portrayed by members of the cast.

Hatcher's adaptation was nominated by the Mystery Writers of America for a 2008 Edgar Award for "Best Play."

The BLUEBARN Theatre began in the late 1980s with graduates from the Professional Theatre Training Conservatory at the State University of New York at Purchase. Seeking to continue the deeply shared artistic aesthetic and practice that they had developed from their conservatory training, and also create theatre outside the constraints of New York City's commercial market, founding members Mary Theresa Green, Nils Haaland, Kevin Lawler, and Hughston Walkinshaw joined forces with Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts to produce their first play.

In 1998, the 10th anniversary season, the BLUEBARN moved into its current home, a beautiful ninety-seat proscenium arch theatre in Omaha's Old Market. The BLUEBARN also opened the Abbott/Pinkoff Gallery, providing local visual artists a place to display their work.

Now in its 20th season, the BLUEBARN has established itself as one of Omaha's premier professional theatre. After producing over 80 plays since 1989, the BLUEBARN's reputation for high quality entertainment and pursuit of stories that challenge both the theatre artists and patrons is solid.
