Spotlight Production of Musical Comedy The Prom
To Play Oklahoma City University This Weekend
Oklahoma City University will present a Spotlight production of the musical comedy The Prom March 6-8 with a cast of 35 accompanied by piano in the intimate Burg Theatre.
The Prom was nominated for six Tony Awards after its 2018 Broadway debut and was named Outstanding Musical at the 2019 Drama Desk Awards. A Netflix film adaptation starring Meryl Streep and James Corden was released in 2020.
The Wanda L. The Bass School of Music’s production is directed by David Herendeen and presented with piano accompaniment by Chuck Koslowske, the music director. Weekend performances will be in Burg Theatre at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday; 2 p.m. Sunday. Tickets: www.okcu.edu/tickets or 405.208.5227.
The plot follows four fading Broadway actors who travel to a small town in Indiana to assist a student banned from bringing her girlfriend to prom. During their stay, self-serving activism evolves into genuine support in a celebration of love, inclusivity and acceptance.
Variety critic Frank Rizzo wrote of The Prom on Broadway: “With a tuneful score, a playful book, and performances that remind you what Broadway heart and chutzpah are all about, this cause celebre of a show turns out to be a joyous, funny, and sweet production that should appeal to several generations of musical fans.”
The show features music by Matthew Sklar and lyrics by Chad Beguelin, who co-wrote the book with Bob Martin. The OCU creative team includes Amelia Castor, choreographer; Tait Truong, lighting designer; Brett Havens, sound designer; Amy Osatinski, intimacy director; and Olivia Benson, stage manager.
OCU’s Oklahoma Opera and Music Theater Company's 2025-26 season concludes April 24-26 with the musical Anastasia. Advance tickets are available at www.okcu.edu/tickets or 405.208.5227.
