Talea Ensemble, acclaimed for its ground-breaking performances of avant-garde and experimental concert music, celebrates the centennial of Pierre Boulez with a performance of his "Derive 2," paired with George Lewis's "Born Obbligato." The Guardian's Tom Service writes of the Boulez, that "there's something definitively French [about the work]. It's as if Debussy were to take a single gesture from "La Mer" and magnify it until it filled 45 minutes. That's the seduction." Lewis's work was inspired by Beethoven's Septet Op. 20, and is dedicated to Beethoven scholar Nicholas Mathew.
