Before it hurts is a dance theater piece structured like a concept album. With form, we intend to stretch and explore the boundaries of dance vocabulary and theatrical text. We’re interested in ways of expression that transcend the confinement of context and conventions of both dance and theater. With content, this piece dissects the tensions between intimacy and isolation, power and vulnerability – the fine line between kiss and kill. What happens when theatrical storytelling is not organized by plot but by a tone and relational theme that weave through fragmented, poetic dialogues? What happens when bodies hold, specify, and heighten the ambiguity of the words?
Through interdisciplinary collaboration, this work is a study on developing relationships through physical movement. We seek to present clarity in movement but fluidity in relationship, balance physicality and text, and earn stillness and silence in equal measure. What can we learn from what is left unspoken?

How online poker reflects performance, timing and reading the room, much like live theatre
There is an undeniable connection between the intuitive world of stage performance and the adrenaline-fueled strategies behind poker online. Both realms demand sharp instincts, a strong sense of timing, and the subtle art of reading an audience, whether that audience sits in velvet seats or holds virtual cards across from a digital felt. As online poker grows in popularity, its parallels with live theatre become ever clearer, showcasing surprising overlaps in psychology, reaction, and the craft of decision-making.
The art of performance: playing a role at the table
Performing on stage and playing online poker both involve slipping into carefully constructed roles. On stage, an actor’s success rides on their ability to inhabit a character, adapting tone, gesture, and speech to create an authentic experience for the audience. Similarly, in online poker, players often adopt different personas, sometimes presenting themselves as cautious newcomers, other times as bold risk-takers. The way a player bets, responds to chat, or paces their actions can all be part of the performance, influencing opponents’ perceptions and prompting strategic misreads.
The Appeal of Live Entertainment
A defining feature of today’s leading betting platforms is the integration of live dealer environments. Rather than relying solely on automated systems, many users now prefer real time interaction that mirrors the atmosphere of physical venues. This is where Galabet distinguishes itself, offering live casino tables alongside a comprehensive sportsbook to create a hybrid entertainment experience.
Just as an actor must commit to their role, poker players need to maintain their “character” consistently. A sudden change in behavior may alert an opponent to a shifting strategy just as an actor breaking character can disrupt the audience’s immersion. In both settings, self-control and the ability to convincingly perform are essential for success. For poker players, this means hiding tells and projecting calm, even under pressure: a feat familiar to anyone who’s ever faced a critical audience.
Timing: the rhythm of play and performance
Timing is everything, whether delivering a punchline from the stage or making a critical move in poker online. In theatre, comedic and dramatic impact depends on knowing exactly when to speak, pause, or move. The flow of a scene can hinge on seconds, and the best performers know how to manipulate pacing for maximum impact. Online poker operates on a similar principle: the moment a player acts can alter the whole direction of a hand.
Deliberate delays or rapid-fire decisions can be tools for deception or intimidation. For example, taking extra time to check a hand may suggest weakness, inviting a bet from the opponent, or it might be a calculated move to bait a reaction. In live theatre, a dramatic pause or hesitation can shift the mood of an entire room. Both disciplines require sensitivity to rhythm and the confidence to act at just the right moment, often under intense scrutiny from peers or rivals.
Reading the room: interpreting cues and energy
The concept of “reading the room” is a cornerstone of both live performance and successful poker play. On stage, actors respond to subtle cues from the audience, laughter, sighs, shifting seats, to adjust their energy or delivery in real time. The dynamic feedback loop between performer and observer shapes every performance. Online poker, despite the absence of physical tells like body language, still demands expert interpretation of available cues: betting patterns, chat timing, and response habits.
A skilled poker player pays close attention to how opponents react in certain situations, building mental profiles to anticipate future moves. In the same way, an experienced actor learns to adapt a scene based on live feedback from the crowd. Both roles call for acute awareness, empathy, and adaptability. The digital poker table and the theatre stage become arenas where emotional intelligence and perceptiveness can tip the scales from ordinary play to memorable moments, influencing outcomes in subtle yet meaningful ways.
