Wetumpka Depot Players Present WILEY AND THE HAIRY MAN, 6/1-3
It is a legend born in an Alabama Swap ... a story of conjurers, of mystical places, and large man .... in great need of a good barber. The Wetumpka Depot Players presents this tale of a young man in a land where myths come to life. Wiley and the Hairy Man is based on an Alabama tale of a time when magic and legend was part of life.
Directed by William Harper, Wiley and the Hairy Man is the not-too-scary story of a young boy who lives in the Alabama swamps with his loving conjure-woman mammy. He fears the ugly Hairy Man, who has taunted his family. But instead of running away, he heads out one day with his faithful hound dogs to face the monster head-on, outwit the Hairy Man and learn some valuable life lessons.
Like Aesop's fables, Wiley and the Hairy Man is drawn from native folk wisdom. "Outwit the Hairy Man three times and he won't scare you ever again," says Mammy. Trembling, Wiley sets out for the woods, prepared to confront the Hairy Man; he looks fear in the face and outwits it. The adventures are presented in lyric poetry and mime. The actors become the woods, the cabin, and all the props, making Wiley an imaginative treat for audiences of all ages.Tickets are $10 and can be purchased over the phone at 334-868-1440 or online at wetumpkadepot.com . The show runs May 31st at 7:30 p.m. (preview), June 1st, 2nd, 7th & 9th at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, June 3rd at 2:00 p.m. at 300 S Main Street, New York, NY.
