Wagner College Theatre launches its 2017-18 Stage One Season with Liz Duffy Adams' playful comedy Or, based on the real life of Britain's first professional English female playwright Aphra Behn. Directed by WCT alum Brian Sgambati '97, the production runs October 10 through October 15.

Aphra Behn, a Restoration playwright among the likes of the more famous Wycherley and Congreve, has one opportunity to have her play produced and fulfill her desperate desire to leave the spy trade behind her. The catch? She must finish and deliver her play by morning all while fighting off distracting romantic temptations, attempting to win a pardon, and trying to save the life of royalty. Her hectic antics unfold into a night of hilarity, passion, and self discovery that tells a story that transcends time.

Or, features Alexandra DeAngelis as Aphra Behn, John Drinkwater as William Scott, Emily Fitzgerald as Maria, Ryan Moroney as King Charles II, Jason Biss as the Jailer, Kristine Palka as Nell Gwynne, and Fiona Sweeney as Lady Davenant.

The production is designed by Phill Hickox (Scenic Design), Katie Wakeman (Lighting Design), Polly Kendrick (Costume Design), Olivia Bishop (Props Master). Brian T. Sharron is Technical Director. Annie Fox is Production Stage Manager. Danielle Allen is Assistant Stage Manager. Hadly Patterson is Assistant Director.

Or, premiered Off-Broadway at the Women's Project Theater in 2009.

Director Brian Sgambati is a 1997 Wagner College Theatre graduate. HIs many acting credits include The Iceman Cometh starring Nathan Lane and Brian Dennehy at the Brooklyn Academy Of Music, as well as the Broadway productions of The Merchant of Venice starring Al Pacino, King Lear with Christopher Plummer, and The Coast of Utopia (directed by Jack O'Brien) with Ethan Hawke and Billy Crudup, which won a record-breaking seven Tony Awards. As an Associate Artist of the award-winning theatre company The Civilians: Gone Missing, Paris Commune, and In the Footprint. Film & Television: Unforgettable, Law & Order, Blue Bloods, and The Word (Best Dramatic Feature, Manhattan Film Festival 2013.)

Or, performances are Thursday through Saturday at 8pm, with matinees Saturday and Sunday at 2pm. Running time is 90 minutes with no intermission. Tickets are $10 and may be purchased by phone Monday through Friday from 12pm-4pm at 718-390-3259, or at the Wagner College Theatre Box Office, located in Main Hall.
