Award-winning Schmuck Theatre announces the New York premiere of BLACKBIRD. Performances begin tonight, April 16 and run through April 28, 2013, Tuesday-Sunday at 8PM with 3PM Saturday and Sunday Matinees. All performances take place at Location One, 26 Greene Street, NYC.

Schmucks Theatre announces its American stage debut, with the US Premiere of Lucia Cox's award-winning Blackbird, directed by MIFTA-winning Artistic Director, Nathan Shreeve.

Blackbird, marks the introduction of an exciting new British theater artist to the New York arts community. Cox has a long-standing relationship with Schmucks Theatre, writing the world premiere production of St. Swithins' Day, which was presented at The Royal Exchange Theatre in Manchester. Heralded as 'a dark and mesmerizing tale of the truly complex nature of love' (The Public Reviews), Blackbird is a Manchester Theatre Award nominee, recipient of the Forever Manchester Award, and was produced in the UK by the prestigious Lowry Theatre, as a part of the 2012 re:Play festival.

Schmucks Theatre is devoted to the creation of challenging Contemporary Theatre and the incubation of emerging artists in the field. Working predominantly with text - new, classic and found, the company's work has been seen at some of the world's major theatre festivals, and has been highly critically acclaimed since forming in November 2009. Now based between London and New York City, Schmucks Theatre is uniquely engaged with emerging theatre artists in both communities, a relationship which has become central to the development of the company's theatrical aesthetic, reflected in the universal, human qualities that propel the company in their work.

Held in a basement for 16 years, a young woman looks back on her life, and the life of her captor. At least, she thinks it is her life. She thinks it is his. A riveting exploration into the confused imagination of the captive mind, Blackbird comes to New York in an original environmental production following sell-out seasons in the UK. Casting will be announced shortly.

Produced by Justine de Penning. Set Design: Nick Benacerraf, Costume Design: Alice Tavener, Light Design: Colin Chauche, Sound Design: Ben Truppin-Brown.

Blackbird is produced by arrangement with House of Orphans and Lucia Cox.
