Repertorio Espanol Announces December Performances

Repertorio Español presents a rotating repertory of theatrical productions of plays as well as dance and musical concerts from Latin America, Spain and by Hispanic-American artists. All productions (except those noted) are presented in Spanish with live simultaneous translation to English via wireless headsets.

Nobel Winning Gabriel García Márquez’ CRÓNICA DE UNA MUERTE ANUNCIADA (Chronicle of a Death Foretold), directed by Jorge Alí Triana. It has performances Wednesday, December 7  at 11am and 1pm, Thursday, December 8 at 7pm, Tuesday, January 17 at 11am, and Wednesday, January 25 at 11am.

A spectacular wedding, a savage scandal, and a murder to which an entire Latin American town appears to be an accessory to the fact. It is 70 minutes long and for ages 17+. Tickets start at $25.

Jorge Amado’s DOÑA FLOR Y SUS DOS MARIDOS (Doña Flor and Her Two Husbands), directed by Jorge Alí Triana. It has performances Saturday, January 28 at 8pm and Sunday, January 29 at 2:30pm.

Doña Flor misses her late husband’s passionate intimacy. She re-marries and magical realism allows her to live (and sleep) with her two husbands. A colorful adaptation of this Brazilian’s masterpiece. This play has nudity and mature content. It is for ages 17+. Tickets start at $30.

Nilo Cruz’s EL COLOR DEL DESEO (The Color of Desire), directed by Michel Hausmann. Performances will be Friday, December 2 at 8pm, Saturday, December 10 at 8pm, Sunday, December 11 at 2:30pm, and Friday, December 16 at 8pm.

"The Color of Desire is set in politically turbulent Havana circa 1960. Its characters are Americans and Cubans, expatriates, revolutionaries and theater people, all adjusting (or not) to the country's rapid change. At its heart is the erotically charged relationship of an American businessman and an out-of-work Cuban actress -- a relationship that becomes a metaphor for their countries' ruptured love affair." - The Miami Herald

Santiago Garcîa’s EL QUIJOTE is directed by Jorge Alí Triana. Performances will be Tuesday, December 6 at 11am and Friday, December 16 at 11am.

A carnivalesque adaptation of Cervantes' masterpiece. Through Don Quijote's adventures, the production presents the illusion of a utopian world with a festive and colorful spirit. It is for ages 13+. The performace time is 100 minutes. Tickets start at $25.

Caridad Svich’s EN EL TIEMPO DE LAS MARIPOSAS (In the Time of the Butterflies), based on Julia Álvarez’s novel, directed by José Zayas. Performances will be Friday, December 2 at 11am, Sunday, December 4 at 2:30pm, Thursday, December 8 at 11am, Thursday, December 15 at 11am, Saturday, December 17 at 3pm, Saturday, January 7 at 8pm, Sunday, January 15 at 2:30pm, Friday, January 27 at 8pm, and Tuesday, January 31 at 11am.

The story of the courageous Mirabal sisters (Patria, Minerva and María Teresa) from the Dominican Republic. The sisters inspired resistance cells throughout the country against the dictatorial regime of Gen. Rafael Leónidas Trujillo. The martyred butterflies come to vibrant life in a warm, brilliant, and dramatic production. It is for Ages 13+. The performance time is 100 minutes. Tickets start at $30.

Saulo García’s LA VIDA EN LOS ESCLAVOS UNIDOS, directed by Juan Carlos Talero. Performances will be Thursday, December 29 at 7pm, Friday, December 30 at 8pm, Sunday, January 1 at 2:30pm and 6:30pm, Saturday, January 21 at 8pm, and Sunday, January 22 at 2:30pm.

This will be presented in Spanish only, translation is not available for this show.

After “El insomnio americano’s” success – which continues to sell out in New York, Miami and Colombia – Saulo García brings a new stand-up-comedy show with the good taste and ingenuity that he is best known for. With outstanding humor, “La vida en los Esclavos Unidos” (Life in the United Slaves’) touches on themes such as the financial crisis, healthcare in the U.S.A., immigrants’ jobs and the lifelong trauma left after the interview for a visa at the U.S. Embassy.

Federico Garcîa Lorca’s LA CASA DE BERNARDA ALBA (The House of Bernarda Alba), directed by René Buch. Performances will be Thursday, December 1 at 11am, Saturday, December 3 at 3pm, Friday, December 9 at 11am, and Tuesday, December 13 at 11am. 

“Silence! Silence!” These are the first and last words spoken by Bernarda Alba, the tyrannical mother who attempts to dominate and control her five unmarried daughters. In this repressed environment, Lorca creates an explosion of hatred, jealousy, despair and passion. It is for ages 15+ and is 90 minutes long. Tickets start at $25

Carmen Rivera's LA GRINGA – Now on its 16th consecutive season, directed by René Buch. Performances will be Monday, December 5 at 11am, Monday, December 19 at 11am, Tuesday, December 20 at 11am, Tuesday, January 10 at 11am, and Wednesday, January 11 at 11am.

The story of a young woman who travels from NYC to Puerto Rico to meet her family and discovers her roots. Her misconceptions are transformed as she learns that being Puerto Rican is a matter of the heart and spirit. It is for ages 13+ and 100 minutes long. Tickets start at $25.

Juan Ruíz de Alarcón’s LA VERDAD SOSPECHA (The Suspicious Truth), directed by Pedro Salazar. Performances are Thursday, December 1 at 7pm and Thursday, January 19 at 11am.

Lies, love, friendship, the power of money and the world of appearances are only some of the multiple themes presented in this classic comedy by Juan Ruíz de Alarcón. “La verdad sospechosa” (The Suspicious Truth) presents the funny lies and tangles plotted by Don García, a young man that returns to Madrid after finishing his studies in Salamanca, and caused mostly by his desire to court the woman he has fallen in love with. “The Suspicious Truth” is without a doubt Ruíz de Alarcón’s best and funniest comedy. It is for ages 15+ and 105 minutes long. Tickets start at $26.

Lina Gallegos’ LOCURAS EN WICHITA (Wild in Wichita), directed Luis Fernández. Sunday, December 18 at 2:30pm, Sunday, January 8 at 2:30pm, and Saturday, January 14 at 8pm.

An elegant Puerto Rican woman and an irreverent Mexican man fall in love when they meet at an assisted living center in Wichita, Kansas. Despite their children’s disapproval and fueled by their newfound love, the couple embarks on adventures that disrupt the center’s assumed tranquility. “Locuras en Wichita” is the Winning Play of the 2009 MetLife ‘Nuestras Voces’ National Latino Plays Initiative sponsored by MetLife Foundation. It is for ages 13+. Tickets start at $25.

Karen Zacarías’ MARIELA EN EL DESIERTO (Mariela in the Desert), directed by Jerry Ruiz. Performances will be Friday, January 20 at 8pm, Sunday, January 22 at 6:30pm, Saturday, January 28 at 3pm, and Sunday, January 29 at 6:30pm.

A painter from a family of artists returns home to the Mexican desert to reconcile with her father. A celebration of the rich cultural and artistic life of México by one of the most prolific and celebrated Mexican American Playwrights.

Children’s Theater: Eduardo Navas’ MI BEBÉ ES UN HÉROE (My Baby is a Heroe) a bilingual children’s theatre show (English/Spanish) by Venezuelan Theatre Troupe Teatro Scaramouches, directed by Eduardo Navas. Performances are Saturday, December 3 at 12pm and Saturday, January 7 at 12pm.

Bring your kids to Repertorio! The mischievous Cuchiflín attempts to take Prince Azulito & Princess Perlita's baby. With help from children in the audience, the baby thwarts Cuchiflín's plans, turning all of them into heroes. Filled with color, laughter and amusing puppets, the play captivates the children's imagination from beginning to end. It is for all ages. Tickets are $12 or are free for parents.

Carlos J. Serrano’s NO HAY MEJOR AMIGO, NI PEOR ENEMIGO (No Better Friend, No Worse Enemy), directed José Zayas. The performance is on Thursday, January 26 at 11am.

The story of an acclaimed professional baseball player who is cornered by fame and debates between his success and personal convictions. The production puts forward the lives of two heralded heroes, the baseball player and his brother, a member of the U.S. Marines whose lives bring us to question; what would I choose; fame or personal conviction? Product of the MetLife Nuestras Voces National Latino Plays Initiative made possible by MetLife Foundation. It is for ages  17+. Tickets start at $25

PILAR RIOJA (Flamenco and Spanish Dance) performances are Saturday, December 3 at 8pm, Sunday, December 4 at 6:30pm, Tuesday, December 6 at 7pm, Friday, December 9 at 8pm, Saturday, December 10 at 3pm, Sunday, December 11 at 6:30pm, Monday, December 12 at 11am, Tuesday, December 13 at 7pm, Wednesday, December 14 at 11am, Thursday, December 15 at 7pm, Saturday, December 17 at 8pm, and Sunday, December 18 at 6:30pm

Pilar Rioja is known worldwide as the Queen of Spanish Dance. Rioja has performed at The Gramercy Arts Theater, Repertorio Español, for over 3 decades. Rioja’s programs are full with live music, flamenco guitarists and Spanish cantaores. It is 105 minutes long and tickets start at $25.
