Noor Theatre‘s inaugural Highlight series draws to a close on Monday December 13th at 7:30 PM at The Fourth Street Theatre. This series of quality plays by playwrights of Middle Eastern descent began this September with Sevan Kaloustian Green's Forgotten Bread, a stirring scene cycle about the Armenian Holocaust; in October, Yussef El Guindi brought us into a Hollywood agent's office to witness the tough choices that Arab artists must face in Jihad Jones and the Kalashnikov Babes; in November, Mona Mansour shared a poignant portrait of a man at a crossroads and the women who love him in The Hour of Feeling.

This Monday, please join us for Betty Shamieh's outrageous Fit for the Queen: A Tragicomedy, directed by Lisa Peterson and starring Kathleen Chalfant. Inspired by the life of Hatshepsut, a woman who ruled as pharaoh in ancient Egypt, Fit for the Queen tells the story of how Hatshepsut's female lover helps her usurp the throne as she finds herself at odds with an unexpectedly ruthless rival for power - her daughter. Don't miss this play of intrigue, farce and sexual politics.
Betty Shamieh's work includes The Black Eyed (New York Theatre Workshop), The Machine (Naked Angels), and Roar (The New Group), which was selected as a New York Times Critics Pick and is currently being taught at universities throughout the United States. Her recent European productions in translation include Again and Against (Playhouse Teater, Stockholm), The Black Eyed (Theater Fournos, Athens), and Territories (co-production of the Landes-Theatre and the 2009 European Union Capital of Culture Festival). Her play, Free Radicals, is slated for production in Dutch translation at Het Zuidelijk Toneel in 2012. Shamieh is a graduate of Harvard College and the Yale School of Drama.

Featuring: Kathleen Chalfant, Demosthenes Chrysan, Lanna Joffrey, Laith Nakli, Michele Rafic, Ariel Shafir, Ted Sod and Rasha Zamamiri.
