Kenita Miller, Carly Hughes, et al. Set for STAND BY THE RIVER, 7/25

On Monday, June 25, 2011, New York Theatre Barn will present its monthly platform, now in its 4th year, for emerging musical theatre writers at The Duplex (the series usually plays the Daryl Roth D-Lounge, by will play The Duplex for the summer). Featured writers for the July 25th installment include Mark Sutton Smith (Stand By The River), and Daniel Green. Executive Producers for NYTB in the D-Lounge are Laura Brandel and Karen Marshall.

The first set of the evening, Live at The Duplex: The Songs of Daniel Green, will feature songs with music and lyrics by Daniel Green. Addition lyrics are by David H. Bell and Beth Blatt. The presentation is directed by Travis Greisler (Tales of the City), and features Morgan Karr, Alexandra Socha, Michael Deleget, and Starr Busby. Green was recently awarded a NAMT grant from the National Fund for New Musicals for an original work commissioned by the Village Theatre in Seattle. He is currently a member of the BMI Musical Theatre Workshop.

The second set of the evening features a presentation of the new musical Stand By The River, in addition to other songs written by Mark Sutton-Smith. Additional Lyrics by Stephen Amato, Alan Gordon, Michael Smith, and Joanne Sutton-Smith. The presentation features Quentin Earl Darrington (Ragtime Revival), Kenita Miller (The Color Purple, Xanadu, Dessa Rose), Jordan Barbour (Langston In Harlem), Carly Hughes (Ragtime Revival, How The Grinch Stole Christmas), Douglas Lyons (The Book of Mormon, Dreamgirls), Tyson Jennette (The Book of Mormon), Okierete Onaodowan (Ruined, Langston In Harlem), Nic Rowe, Mathew Faucher, Graham Stevens (In Transit), and Desi Diaz. The creative team includes Stephen Amato (director), David John Madore (musical director), and Francesca Harper (choreographer). Stand By The River is set in the free black community of Philadelphia before the Civil War and tells the true story of William Still, known to history as "The Father of the Underground Railroad". An uplifting adventure story, it relates the journey of one man trying to master a tragic past, reunite his family, and build a completely different future for his community. Stand By The River was presented at the ASCAP NYC Musical Theater Workshop 2004, Stages 2003, Theatre Building Chicago, and was a finalist for the 2002 Richard Rodgers Awards.

NYTB in the D-Lounge/NYTB at The Duplex takes place on the last Monday of every month and is a platform for emerging musical theatre writers. The series fuses two contrasting writers (or writing teams) to create an eclectic evening of music and theatre.

Under the direction of Joe Barros (Producing Artistic Director), New York Theatre Barn is a non-profit theatre company founded in 2007 and is dedicated to the investigation, development, and advancement of new works. Productions include the all-female musical I Married Wyatt Earp (59E59 Theaters/co-production with Prospect Theater Co.) with Heather Mac Rae and Carolyn Mignini, the musical Wood (New York Musical Theatre Festival/Emily Miller) with Cady Huffman, and Bridget Bailey's award winning solo play Child of Hungry Times. New York Theatre Barn has been instrumental in the development of Ordinary Days, I Married Wyatt Earp, the musical parody Hey, You Know What Movie Would Make A Good Musical?, Hot Mess in Manhattan, R.R.R.E.D., and Welcome to My Life. NYTB is currently developing Speargrove Presents, a new musical conceived by the company and based on true events about a conservative Texas high school's planned production of the musical Rent.
