HERE Arts Extends ARIAS WITH A TWIST Through 12/31

HERE Arts Center in New York has announced that ARIAS WITH A TWIST has been extended to run through December 31, 2008. The CD ARIAS WITH A TWIST was released on October 3.

Created by Joey Arias, a New York performance artist, drag artist, actor and singer, and Basil Twist, a noted puppeteer, ARIAS WITH A TWIST is a 70-minute collaborative play featuring Arias performing with virtually unseen puppeteers who handle marionettes and hand puppets. It premiered on June 12, 2008 at the Dorothy B. Williams Theatre at the HERE Arts Center in New York. Arias sings several songs, including Kashmir by Led Zeppelin, All By Myself by Eric Carmer and Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds by the Beatles. The New York Times wrote, "Eat you heart out Madonna." TimeOut New York said that the play is an "eye-popping, delightfully transgressive lysergic fantasia." The New York Post called it "gleeful anarchic fun." The New York Press said it is "a glittering, trippy fantasia." The puppeteers are Oliver Dalzell, Randy Ginsburg, Kirsten Kammermeyer, Mat Leabo, Jessica Scott, Lindsay Abromaitis Smith.

Joey Arias, a North Carolina native, arrived in New York in the mid-70s. He was a fixture of the 80s New York performance art scene, developing a successful career in cabaret. He portrayed Joan Crawford in New York productions of CHRISTMAS WITH THE CRAWFORDS. His film credits include BIG TOP PEE-WEE, MONDO NEW YORK, ELVIRA: MISTRESS OF THE DARK, FLAWLESS, TO WONG FOO: THANKS FOR EVERYTHING! Julie Newmar and WIGSTOCK: THE MOVIE. Before ARIAS WITH A TWIST, he played the role of the Mistress of Seduction ZUMANITY, A Cirque du Soleil show which ran at the New York-New York Hotel and Casino on the famed Las Vegas strip.

Twist was recently selected by TimeOut New York for the "The New York 40," a group of important New Yorkers featured with interviews to celebrate the 40th anniversary of TimeOut. He is the recipient of an Obie Award and a Guggenheim fellowship, and is the founder and director of the Dream Music Puppetry Program at HERE Arts Center.
