Downtown Art Hosts THE PLASTIC COUCH and MEN WHO CALL THEMSELVES ARTISTS, 6/9-10
The final two plays of Downtown Art's 2010/11 Writers Project, 'The Plastic Couch' by Alyssa Burgos and 'Men who Call Themselves Artists' by India Kotiswill, are presented tonight, June 9 & June 10 at 7:30pm.
'The Plastic Couch' - by Alyssa Burgos
A portrait of a large Nuyorican family - three generations trying to love and care for each other, each in their own way - and the grandmother whose humor, eccentricities, and mental illness inhabits the center of their world.
'Men who Call Themselves Artists' - by India Kotis
Set in 1955, the play follows Rosa, a young Jewish woman who grew up in poverty on the Lower East Side, and is now trying to make her way as a photographer. Often brusque, determinedly unsentimental, Rosa feels like she's seen it all. Now Jimmy, a young Midwestern former G.I. studying art in Cooper Union, is challenging her in ways she's not sure she likes.
