Columbia Stages Presents Edward Bond's THE WOMAN March 11-14

Columbia Stages presents THE WOMAN, written by Edward Bond and directed by Andrea Ferran, running March 11th- 14th, 2009, at The Riverside Theatre, located in the historic Riverside Church at 91 Claremont Avenue between 120th and 122nd Streets.

After years of conflict between the Trojans and the Greeks, control of Troy is left in the hands of a woman. Hoping for a quick treaty, the leader of the Greeks sends his wife to tactfully negotiate possession of a prized statue. But when the women meet, the laws of war are changed forever.

The show plays one week only with evening performances Wednesday - Saturday, March 11th - 14th at 8:00PM and one matinee performance Saturday, March 14th at 2:00PM.

Biographies

ANDREA FERRAN (Director) is a UK-born theatre director living in New York. Recent directing credits include: Churchill's Mad Forest, Chekhov's Ward No. 6 (Schapiro Theatre), Marlowe's Dr. Faustus, Kane's Cleansed (Oxford Fire Station Theatre), Reza's Conversations After a Burial, Vargas Llosa's la Chunga (Burton Taylor Theatre). Before directing The Woman, Andrea previously directed Bond's Have I None and Summer. She has collaborated on new works with playwrights Melisa Tien and Steven Gaultney.

From 2006-09, Andrea has been an Arts Fellow of the A.G. Leventis Foundation, an organization that supports research into Greek culture. With the award she has directed productions of Medea, Alcestis, and Trojan Women. Andrea is also a recipient of the PEO International and Bevir Memorial Scholarships. In 2006, she was sponsored by the Japanese Embassy to study theatre in Japan and direct Shakespeare's Taming of the Shrew. In 2008, she directed Breakbeat, a multimedia production for young people.

Andrea has assisted Brian Kulick, Andrei Serban, RoBert Woodruff, and Shen Wei. She received her B.A. in English from Oxford University where she was also the recipient of the University Award for Directing.

COLUMBIA STAGES (Producer) is the producing arm of the Oscar Hammerstein II Center for Theatre Studies of Columbia University's School of the Arts. Columbia Stages annually presents a season of graduate actor and director productions as well as a festival of new plays by emerging playwrights. The theatre program at Columbia University's School of the Arts offers M.F.A. degrees in acting,directing, playwriting, dramaturgy, stage management, and theatre managementand producing. The goal of the program is to provide each student with the foundation for a career in professional theatre as well as the tools to embrace an ever-changing theatrical landscape and shape the future of theatre.
