After its extraordinary success in Korea and Hong Kong, Korea's very first English musical The Covenant Journey will launch its 3-week run on Broadway starting on November 5th.   The production will then move to Philadelphia and then to Washington D.C.  The musical's Broadway debut comes only four years after its first public performance in 2006.

The story is about a young girl who dreams of becoming a musician but has her hopes shattered when she is faced with a series of tragic events.  The musical juxtaposes the story of Biblical character Joseph with the present-day teenager Karyn, following her struggles of self-discovery and her journey back to her hopes and dreams.  Mark Ward of Cirque de Soleil commented "[The Covenant Journey] describes problems of the youth better than any other musical."

During its opening run at Korea's prestigious Seoul Arts Center (equivalent to Lincoln Center), ticket sales exceeded 91% and was followed by sold out performances in Korea's regional cities.  This unexpected success triggered the musical's tour of Hong Kong, where it was received with the same level of enthusiasm.

With the union of over 80 Native Korean performers, American actors and musicians from different backgrounds, The Covenant Journey has been praised for pioneering an innovative model for musical production in Korea.  The show has outstanding world-class music and is a visual spectacle with over 200 Egyptian costumes and fantastic stage settings including recreations of Pharaoh's palace.

Initially composed by a 23-year old student in Korea for a church talent showcase, the songs' lyrics were added by an American-born Korean lyricist.  The work soon fell into the hands of a young producer, Chang-yeol Choi, recognized for his original musical Hansel and Gretel and was later fine-tuned by George Liszt of the Institute of Performing Arts Scream Factory in Germany.

The Covenant Journey will be playing at the Gerald W. Lynch Theater (Broadway at 59th Street) from November 5th to 21st.
Merriam Theatre in Philadelphia from November 26th to 28th
The National Theatre in Washington D.C. from December 3rd to 5th
