New ICA At VCU Will Present New Works By Rashid Johnson, Jonathas De Andrade And More This Fall

The new Institute for Contemporary Art (ICA) at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU), Richmond's first institution devoted to contemporary art, today announced it will present two exhibitions this fall featuring site-specific commissions and installations by artists Rashid Johnson, Abbas Akhavan, Jonathas de Andrade, David Hartt, Julianne Swartz, and Pascale Marthine Tayou. Opening on October 17, 2018, Provocations: Rashid Johnson, the first of an ongoing annual exhibition series responding to the ICA's building designed by Steven Holl, and Hedges, Edges, Dirt, a survey of international contemporary multimedia artists, will continue to explore issues of imminent political and social relevance. Related programming will engage local and international audiences with artist-led performances, film screenings and conversations.

The Historic North Theatre in Danville, VA announces its new Celebrity Series starring Nationally Known Talent. The first show in the new series is ALRIGHT THEN starring veteran TV stars Orson Bean and Alley Mills on July 14-7:30 PM-One Show Only. Tickets are $25.00, 20.00 &15.00. This show is presently (and has been for over 6 months) playing sold-out in Hollywood. Ms. Mills has a week off of TV's The Bold and Beautiful and she and Orson are kindly flying to Danville to present the show.
30th Anniversary Artistic Year Begins At Blackfriars Playhouse

The American Shakespeare Center (ASC) began its 30th Anniversary Artistic Year with the launch of the 2018 Summer/Fall Season and a performance of As You Like It on June 13. The 2018 Summer/Fall Season will also feature a world-premiere adaptation of Jane Austen's Emma by Emma Whipday, Richard III, and George Etherege's The Man of Mode.

This Summer TheatreVCU-born sketch comedy group Discount Tuna is partnering with Firehouse Theatre to perform a weekend of obscene and absurd original material. Discount Tuna was founded by Rachel Lamb, Dante Piro, and Chandler Matkins while they were performing at the bi-weekly No Shame Variety Show held at Shafer Street Playhouse in Richmond, Virginia. The idea behind Discount Tuna is to bring together three people who work in completely different ways. This was the perfect formula for a new kind of comedy show. After a sold out run at Coalition Theatre in 2017 Discount Tuna is excited to unveil their bigger, better show. This is sketch comedy at its most unexpected.

Written by Beth Henley, this American theatre classic follows the Magrath sisters as they reunite to escape their past in the hopes of a better tomorrow, however, their present reality offers hilarious and troublesome obstacles.This Pulitzer Prize-winning play takes a touching and irreverent look at sisterhood and what it means to find yourself amidst despair. The Hub Theatre, continues its foray into new plays that highlight our common humanity with the world premiere of The Secrets of the Universe (and other songs) by playwright Marc Acito. Secrets, the final production in The Hub's 10th season, will run from July 6-29, 2018 at the John Swayze Theatre in Fairfax, Virginia and is a Co-Production with the Jewish Community Center of Northern Virginia. Secrets marks The Hub's third production by Marc Acito, after audience favorite Birds of a Feather (2012 Helen Hayes Outstanding New Play winner; Outstanding Ensemble nominee), and How I Paid for College (starring Broadway's Tony Nominated Alex Brightman). The show will be directed by Hub's founding Artistic Director, Helen R. Murray, and produced by incoming Artistic Director, Matt Bassett.

5th Wall Theatre's artistic director Carol Piersol and TheatreLAB's artistic director Deejay Gray announce their upcoming co-production HAND TO GOD, an ingenious contemporary comedy that shocked and delighted audiences for years on the Off-Broadway and Broadway circuits before nabbing five Tony nominations including one for Best New Play. The local production of this play that opens July 13th at The Basement in downtown Richmond features a talented local cast led by Adam Turck playing both Jason and his demonically possessed hand puppet, Tyrone.
