Virginia Stage Company to Present New Reinvention of THE TAMING OF THE SHREW

Virginia Stage Company (VSC) presents its highly anticipated new production The Taming of the Shrew as a synthpop musical with original music and lyrics by local musician and producer Jacki Paolella. VSC's Shrew has a little bit of everything, costumes and glam, music you can dance to and a very sexy cast of killer musicians and singers.

Adapter/Director Patrick Mullins uses the outdated misogynistic moments and themes of The Taming of the Shrew to explore gender parity, relationship roles and marriage definitions via an all-female cast in a rock band called the SHREWS. The only male cast member plays Kate. "We've tried to stick to what Shakespeare as well as what all good theatre is good at-examining societal issues in an entertaining manner that is accessible to all," says Mullins.

VSC launched an initiative that celebrates women in the community led by VSC's Marketing Director Janelle Burchfield, via a photo series called #wontbetamed. "We wanted to do something to pull the new themes explored in the show into the community and celebrate strength rather than gender limitations, and the photos have been quite a hit!" The Taming of the Shrew is recommended for "mature-ish audience's" and will run February 24th through March 15th 2015. Preview Performances run this week: Tuesday, February 24th at 7:00pm and Wednesday and Thursday, February 25th at 8:00pm. Tickets for Preview Performances are $25. Opening Night is Friday, February 27th at 8:00pm, featuring pre and post show entertainment. Regular performances will run Tuesdays at 7:00pm and Wednesdays-Saturdays at 8:00pm. Matinee performances will be offered on Saturday afternoons at 4:00pm and Sunday afternoons at 2:00pm.
