Virginia Repertory Theatre announces the opening of They're Playing Our Song on Friday, November 7 at Hanover Tavern, 13181 Hanover Courthouse Road. The show runs through Sunday, January 4.

This Tony nominated musical with a book by Neil Simon, lyrics by Carole Bayer Sager and music by Marvin Hamlisch premiered at the Ahmanson Theatre in Los Angeles in 1978 and opened on Broadway in 1979. Loosely based on the real-life personal and professional relationship of Hamlisch and Bayer Sager, the show features Vernon, an award wining, wisecracking composer and Sonia, an offbeat lyricist. The two artists come together in hopes of a successful collaboration and end up falling for each other after several trials and mishaps. The show was nominated for ten Tony awards.

Jan Guarino, who directed They're Playing Our Song in 2001 for Barksdale Theatre, will both direct and choreograph this latest production. Guarino is well known on the Richmond stage as a director and actor. Directing credits include The Wizard of Oz and Barefoot in the Park for Virginia Rep and many shows in Virginia Rep's Children's Season. Recent acting credits include Charitable Sisterhood, God of Carnage, and Busytown for Virginia Rep.

Aly Wepplo (Steal Magnolias, Seussical, Shrek for Virginia Rep, Importance of Being Ernest for Henley Street/Richmond Shakespeare) will play the role of Sonia, and Landon Nagel (Children of a Lesser God, Guys and Dolls, Full Monty for Virginia Rep, Detroit for Cadence Theatre and Virginia Rep, H2O for 5th Wall) will play the role of Vernon. Ensemble: Durron Tyre, Todd Paterson, Jeff Sundheim, Jessi Johnson, Brianne Chin, and Anne Michelle Forbes.
