Theatre IV announces the return of Seussical the musical, to the Sara Belle and Neil November Theatre, running tonight, April 27 through Sunday, May 20, 2012.  Based on the work of Dr. Seuss with music and lyrics by Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens, this production offers a new generation of kids the timeless story of friendship and community.   Director, Chase Kniffen, calls Seussical, "the perfect family musical that will both touch and entertain all ages, from four to four hundred."  Seussical is one of several Theatre IV offerings in the Minds Wide Open: Virginia Celebrates Children and the Arts initiative.

A cast of eighteen adults and five children features several returning cast members from the 2005 production including actor and musical director, Jason Marks, (New York credits: Young Edgar, Broadway Gypsy of the Year 2010 with Carol Channing, Bound for Broadway) and Susan Sanford (Barksdale's God of Carnage, Lend Me a Tenor, Boeing Boeing, Theatre IV's A Year with Frog and Toad).  Ford Flannagan (Theatre IV's Peter Pan, Barksdale's Circle Mirror Transformation, writing and directing of Theatre IV's Little Red Hen), Aly Wepplo (Theatre IV's The Ugly Duckling and Harriet Tubman, Barksdale's 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, Is He Dead? and Lend Me a Tenor) and third grader Nicholas Caviness (Theatre IV's Honk!, SPARC's Aladin, Jr.) round out the lead roles.  The colorful costume designs are by award-winning Master Puppeteer, Terry Snyder.  The diverse musical score offers everything from pop and gospel to Caribbean, along with the hip-hop, acrobatic dance choreography by Chase Kniffen and Ali Thibodeau.

With the Cat in the Hat serving as narrator (and sometimes mischievous leader), the story line follows Dr. Seuss's Horton Hears a Who with over fifteen other Seuss books thrown into the mix.  As the powers of friendship, loyalty, and community emerge triumphant, young audiences learn to stand up for what they believe in and grown ups revisit their childhood.  Some adults may even shed a tear or two. The two-hour musical will be most enjoyed by ages four and up.  The Seussical cast will be making several public appearances around town including Maymont's Family Easter on Saturday, April 7 and Easter on Parade, Sunday, April 8.
