Bluegrass Favorite SELDOM SCENE Comes To Lime Kiln 8/16

By: Aug. 07, 2009

On Sunday, August 16th at 7:30pm, Theater at Lime Kiln presents with longtime bluegrass favorite, The Seldom Scene.

Formed in the Bethesda, Maryland basement of banjo player Ben Eldridge in 1971, The Seldom Scene grew from a one-night-per-week, local ensemble to one of the most influential bluegrass groups in America by the 1980's.

The Seldom Scene, changed personnel often for 25 years. After losing their founder and leader John Duffey to a heart attack in 1996, the group disbanded. Eldridge, a significant force in banjo music, reformed the group. He was joined by former guitarist-turned mandolin performer Lou Reid, and the band began performing live again and recorded its return album, Scene It All, in 2000. The band currently consists of Dudley Connell (guiter/lead vocals), Ben Eldridge (banjo), Lou Reid (mandolin/tenor vocals), Fred Travers (dobro/lead vocals) and Ronnie Simpkins (bass/baritone vocals).
In 2008 The Seldom Scene was recognized with their third Grammy nomination for Best Bluegrass Album for their 20th and latest release, SCENEchronized.

On a side note, Ben Eldridge's son Chris performed at Lime Kiln on May 30th with Punch Brothers, the hot new jazz-grass band formed by mandolin virtuoso Chris Thile.

Tickets are on sale at Lexington Visitors Center and Rockbridge Music or by calling 540-463-7088. For more information, go to theateratlimekiln.com.
