Auditions are on a first come, first-served basis located at the
Crocker Theater on the Cabrillo College Campus. Bring sheet music in your key; accompanist will be provided. 32 bars or 1 minute cutoff time, stylistically appropriate tune. A cappella or tape accompaniment is not acceptable. A dramatic or comedic monologue no more than 1 minute long MAY be requested. All ethnicities are highly encouraged to audition. Many of the Ensemble have significant speaking roles and many double, as well. Looking for excellent singers who move very well, especially character types of all ages.
MALE PRINCIPLE CHARACTERS
DR. VOLTAIRE / PANGLOSS / GOVERNOR / SAGE Voltaire is the story's wise and all-knowing narrator. Dr. Pangloss is Cunegonde and Candide's teacher. He loves Paquette. Very large and demanding character part that covers four diverse roles with different ages and accents. Requires an actor with presence, intelligence, humor, energy and wild creativity. Age: 40 to 50. Vocal range top: G5. Vocal range bottom: G2
CANDIDE: A naïve and trusting youth, who blindly follows the teachings of his teacher. Cunegonde's lover and illegitimate nephew to the Baron and Baroness. Age: 20 to 30. Vocal range top: A5. Vocal range bottom: A3
MAXIMILLIAN: Cunegonde's brother. A young, handsome aristocrat whose looks are only matched by his vanity. Versatile and comedic. Age: 20 to 25. Vocal range top: G5. Vocal range bottom: G2
BARON: Cunegonde and Maximillian's father. A stuffy nobleman and indiscreet womanizer. Strong comedic character actor-singer that doubles in other parts. Age: 45 to 65
FEMALE PRINCIPLE CHARACTERS
CUNEGONDE: A blonde beauty and Candide's love interest. Faithful, strong, and attractive. Demanding vocally. Age: 18 to 26. Vocal range top: E6. Vocal range bottom: A3
OLD LADY: Though she was once beautiful, she is now old and ugly with one buttock. Acts as a guide and teacher to Candide and Cunegonde. Character actor of great wit and wisdom who moves well. Age: 50 to 75. Vocal range top: A5. Vocal range bottom: A3
PAQUETT: A overtly sexy but good-hearted maid who does her best to help reunite Candide with Cunegonde. Perhaps a bit dim. Age: 18 to 25. Vocal range top: G5. Vocal range bottom: A3
BARONESS: Cunegonde and Maximillian's mother and the Baron's wife. Strong comedic character actor-singer who doubles in other parts, as well. Age: 40 to 60
ENSEMBLE: Large group of singers (good movers) who play: Soldiers, Citizens, Prostitutes, Sailors, Pirates, Banquet Guests, Houri, Animals, etc.
