Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra to Play Mayo Center This Spring

By:

Grammy-winning trumpeter Wynton Marsalis leads the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, fifteen of today's finest jazz soloists and ensemble players, at Mayo Performing Arts Center on Thursday, May 4, 2017 at 8 pm. Tickets are $59 - $109.

Among the performers in the Orchestra is Ted Nash, who won a 2017 Grammy in the category of "Best Large Ensemble Album" for his recording Presidential Suite: Eight Variations on Freedom by the Ted Nash Big Band.

Wynton Marsalis is the managing and artistic director of Jazz at Lincoln Center and a world-renowned trumpeter and composer. Born in New Orleans, Louisiana in 1961, Marsalis began his classical training on trumpet at age 12, entered The Juilliard School at age 17, and then joined Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers. He made his recording debut as a leader in 1982, and has since recorded more than 60 jazz and classical recordings, which have won him nine GRAMMY Awards. In 1983 he became the first and only artist to win both classical and jazz GRAMMYs in the same year and repeated this feat in 1984. Marsalis is also an internationally respected teacher and spokesman for music education, and has received honorary doctorates from dozens of U.S. universities and colleges.

The mission of Jazz at Lincoln Center is to entertain, enrich and expand a global community for Jazz through performance, education and advocacy. We believe Jazz is a metaphor for Democracy. Because jazz is improvisational, it celebrates personal freedom and encourages individual expression. Because jazz is swinging, it dedicates that freedom to finding and maintaining common ground with others. Because jazz is rooted in the blues, it inspires us to face adversity with persistent optimism.
