The best of times is now at the Washington Crossing Open Air Theatre when La Cage aux Folles hits the outdoor stage for a two weekend run. Set to open on Friday, June 19, performances are Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 7:30 pm through June 28.
After twenty years of un-wedded bliss, Georges and Albin, two men partnered for better or worse get a bit of both when Georges' son announces his impending marriage to the daughter of a bigoted, narrow-minded politician. Alban tries to help by making a perfect family but the situation is further complicated due to the fact that the couple runs a drag nightclub in St. Tropez where Alban is the star performer Zaza. Georges reluctantly agrees to masquerade as "normal" when he meets the family of the bride-to-be but Alban has other plans. La Cage aux Folles features the bawdy humor of Harvey Fierstein and a musical score by Jerry Herman. Notable tunes include "The Best of Times," "Song in the Sand" and the poignant "I Am What I Am." The Open Air Theatre production features two actors in the leads well known to area audiences. Michael Moeller will portray Alban/Zaza, a role he has played numerous times including productions at the Bucks County Playhouse. Moeller has been seen during previous Open Air Theatre seasons as Herbie in Gypsy and the Cowardly Lion in The Wizard of Oz. In the role of Georges is David Whiteman. Audiences will remember Whiteman as Man in Chair in The Drowsy Chaperone and the monster in Young Frankenstein. He has become a staple during the yuletide season for his portrayal of Ebenezer Scrooge in the Downtown Performing Arts Center's annual production of A Christmas Carol.
