The Union County Performing Arts Center has, once again, taken another step forward in broadening the scope of their offerings for the community of Rahway and Union County.

The historic, 1330-seat, Main Stage Theatre, will play host to the 2017-19 New Jersey Golden Gloves Boxing Championships. The 2017 championships will be held the evening of Saturday, April 22 with a VIP Buffet (to be held at the Fazioli Room of Hamilton Theatre) at 6:00pm and the boxing to begin at 7:30pm.

"It is truly an honor to host the New Jersey Golden Gloves here at UCPAC," stated UCPAC's Executive Director, Brian Remo. "This event provides an entirely different avenue for Rahway to strengthen its foundation as a historic cornerstone in our state."

Golden Gloves Boxing is one of the most recognizable brands in the sport of boxing. Sanctioned by USA Boxing, this event features the top amateur boxers in the great State of New Jersey as they vie for weight class championship belts and a trip to the Golden Gloves National Championship to be held in May in Lafayette, LA at the Cajun Dome.

New Jersey Golden Gloves Championships is one of the most historic events in the sport of boxing and just in the last year has produced a 2016 Olympic Silver Medal Winner for the USA in Rio. Shakur Stevenson, the 2015 New Jersey State Champion in the 123lb Open Class division, went on to win the World Junior title, win the 2016 Olympic Trials and medal in Rio! Stevenson is the first American male to medal in Olympic Boxing since Andre Ward (Gold) and Andre Dirrell (Bronze) in 2004.

Rahway Mayor Samson Steinman: "We are truly proud and honored to be presenting the New Jersey Golden Gloves Championships here in Rahway. Moreover, the entire concept of this thrilling display of athleticism and determination in the historic venue of the UCPAC Main Stage is an experience I am personally looking forward to."

UCPAC has partnered with event Production Company, Kevin Barbaro Productions, which will be handling much of the planning and production of the event. The owner, Kevin Barbaro, has a long history of planning large-scale sporting events, including the 2011 NCAA Division I Cross Country Regional Championships in Toledo, Ohio. "I have worked with UCPAC on numerous projects and this will be an exciting new avenue to pursue," said Barbaro. "I feel like this will be an incredible event with a packed theatre."

The Union County Performing Arts Center's Main Stage is housed in the restored "Rahway Theatre" - which has resided in Downtown Rahway since 1928. This historic landmark has become the centerpiece of the recently established arts district of Rahway, New Jersey, which has played a vital role in the revitalization and cultural renaissance of the community.

The Main Stage is listed in both state and national registers of historic sites, and is now operating as a multipurpose venue for the performing arts. It is the largest center for the performing arts in Union County. The renovations on the 1330-seat venue were completed in 1960.
