The Drowsy Chaperone, the most celebrated musical comedy of the 2006 Broadway season makes its debut at New Jersey's Washington Crossing Open Air Theatre. Set as the first production of the outdoor theater's 2013 season, the production will run for two weekends from today, May 24 through June 2. Performances are 7:30 pm on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

The Drowsy Chaperone tells the story of a modern day musical theater addict known simply as "Man in Chair." To chase his blues away he drops the needle on his favorite cast recording of the 1928 musical comedy, The Drowsy Chaperone. From the crackle of his hi-fi, the musical magically bursts to life on-stage telling the tale of a pampered Broadway starlet who wants to give up show business to get married, her producer who sets out to sabotage the nuptials, her chaperone, the debonair groom, the dizzy chorine, the Latin lover and a pair of gangsters who double as pastry chefs. Man in Chair's love of The Drowsy Chaperone speaks to anyone who has ever been transported by the theater.

In the leading role of Man in Chair is Lambertville, NJ actor David Whiteman. David has starred in productions throughout the region and specifically has appeared on the Open Air stage in Annie, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and Moon Over Buffalo among others. Area audiences have seen David as Ebenezer Scrooge in the Downtown Players' annual production of A Christmas Carol. He is joined onstage by his wife, actress Jenny Johnson who plays the role of The Drowsy Chaperone. Open Air audiences will remember Jenny for her memorable turn as Miss Hannigan in the 2010 and 2012 productions of Annie.

The Washington Crossing Open Air Theatre production of The Drowsy Chaperone will be performed today, May 24, Saturday, May 25 and Sunday, May 26 at 7:30. The musical comedy returns for a second weekend of performances on Friday, May 31, Saturday, June 1 and Sunday, June 2 again at 7:30. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for children (ages 12 and under). Tickets can always be purchased at the Open Air Theatre Box Office prior to the performance. Group discounts are available.
