Schola Cantorum on Hudson Holds SPIRIT EARTH Concert, 5/19
For Spirit Earth, the third concert in the season themed Our Mother Earth, Schola Cantorum on Hudson (SCH) performers will be joined by this season's Cantorum Young Singers group and the noted New Jersey Youth Chorus under the Artistic Direction of Patricia Joyce. This season's theme, Our Mother Earth, represents our shared responsibility for honoring and caring for our planet. The May concerts intertwine SCH's Annual Ethnic Celebration Series and draws upon the wisdom of indigenous American cultures.
Spirit Earth will include Alberto Grau's powerful Kasar Mie La Gaji, along with works by Joan Szymko, Ola Gjeilo, and PROJECT: ENCORE composer, Keane Southard. The evening will also include several movements from Jackson Berkey's Native American Ambiances. Hand percussion and natural flute will appear in several selections, and audience members will be invited to join 100-plus voices in closing this season devoted to Our Mother Earth.
"We are having a great time creating a broad soundscape of nature sounds, instruments and voices in ways designed to draw all of us into a sense of 'oneness' with the Earth as our home," says SCH Artistic Director, Dr. Deborah Simpkin King. During this unique concert performance, audience participation will underscore through music that we are all 'citizen artists' and have a positive impact on our collective destiny. One of our selections by PROJECT: ENCORE composer Keane Southard is entitled 'Do you hear how many you are?' and speaks optimistically as we declare it in song!"
