Pianist Simone Dinnerstein Plays Bach and New Philip Glass Work with PSO
On Sunday, January 28 at 4 pm, renowned pianist Simone Dinnerstein performs J.S. Bach's Keyboard Concerto No. 7 in G Minor, BWV 1058 with Princeton Symphony Orchestra (PSO), juxtaposed with a new concerto written for her by Philip Glass and co-commissioned by the PSO. Bookending these works are Mason Bates' Auditorium and Maurice Ravel's Le tombeau de Couperin. Music Director Rossen Milanov conducts the concert at Richardson Auditorium on the campus of Princeton University. Early-arriving patrons will have the opportunity to listen to Mr. Milanov and Ms. Dinnerstein discuss the program at the 3pm Pre-Concert Talk.
Glass' Third Piano Concerto alters the traditional concerto form established by Bach, making each movement progressively slower and more disciplined, rather than fast-slow-fast. The concerto's final movement was written as an homage to the Estonian composer Arvo Pärt.
Soloist Simone Dinnerstein is a searching, inventive, and enterprising artist, who is motivated by a desire to find the musical core of every work she approaches. She is known for her "majestic originality of vision" (The Independent) and for organizing dynamic collaborations that not only bolster the work of world-renowned orchestras and players, but bring the talents of lesser-known ones to light.
The Baroque period is further drawn upon by Mason Bates whose Auditorium features a call-and-response between the live orchestra and differently pitched, electronically recorded music played on period instruments. The concert concludes with Maurice Ravel's Le tombeau de Couperin memorializing a noted musical family of the period which included composer François Couperin.
