Obie Winner Ethan Lipton's NO PLACE TO GO to Play Capitol Center for the Arts, 5/1

Singer, Composer, and Obie-Award Winning Playwright Ethan Lipton and His Orchestra Brings His Nationally Acclaimed Semi-Staged Production "No Place to Go," to the Capitol Center's Spotlight Café on Friday, May 1, at 8pm.

In "No Place to Go," warm melodies are the backdrop for composer and playwright Ethan Lipton's tender, yet sometimes irreverent lyrics and comedic prose that compassionately capture Americans' love-hate relationship with their jobs. Throughout this semi-staged play and musical encounter, Lipton, through the lens of the recently unemployed, reminds us of our attachment to work and our underlying resentment to it, using the 2008 economic collapse as a metaphor for corporate greed.

The company where Lipton has worked for the past 10 years is moving to another planet and Lipton doesn't want to go. Directed by Leigh Silverman, "No Place to Go" delivers a hilarious, irreverent, and personal musical ode to the unemployed. Ethan Lipton and His Orchestra perform this OBIE Award-winning theatrical song cycle steeped in musical traditions including jazz, blues, folk, country, and lounge.

Lipton is joined by his incomparable orchestra members: Eben Levy, guitar; Ian Riggs, upright bass; Vito Dieterle, saxophones; and Rick Snell, electric guitar.

Ethan Lipton and His Orchestra have released four albums and played throughout New York and beyond. The band has been featured on radio shows such as "Weekend Edition," "The World," and "Soundcheck," and contributed songs to The Clash cover album "Sandinista" and the film "The Shift." As a performer, Ethan has worked with Laurie Anderson, Cynthia Hopkins, Elevator Repair Service, Matt Berninger of The National, and Gabriella Barnstone.

As a playwright, Lipton's work has been seen and heard in New York, Los Angeles, Seattle, Edinburgh (Scotland), and Berne (Austria). He is the recipient of a NYFA grant and a Drama-League Award for playwriting. He has been a Kesselring prize nominee, an O'Neill Conference finalist, a member of the Public's Emerging Writers Group, and he is a Playwright's Realm Fellow.
