Meet Metachroma Theatre-Montreal's only independent theatre company of professional actors of colour; an important new addition to the local arts scene, contributing to the Canadian theatre landscape as a whole. Metachroma, with the generous support of The Segal Centre for the Performing Arts, presents Richard III, written by William Shakespeare and directed by Joel Miller. The show will run Wednesday, Sept. 19 through Monday, Sept. 30, 2012.

After a long civil war between the royal family of York and the royal family of Lancaster, England enjoys a period of peace under King Edward IV and the victorious Yorks. But Edward’s younger brother Richard resents Edward’s power and the happiness of those around him. Malicious, power-hungry, and bitter about his physical deformity, Richard secretly aspires to the throne—and decides to kill anyone in his way to becoming king.

Metachroma Theatre addresses the under-representation of visible minority actors in Canadian theatre, challenging current perceptions by telling stories with a diverse cast in order to normalize the presence of these artists on stage.

With: Metachroma Theatre members Quincy Armorer, Tamara Brown, Lucinda Davis, Julie Tamiko Manning, Mike Payette and Jamie Robinson, along with Walter Borden, Jimmy Blais, Diana Fajrajsl, Azeem Nathoo, Meilie Ngand Amrit Sanger. Set and costume design, Veronica Classen; lighting design, Jodi Burkholder.

All performances take place at Segal Centre for Performing Arts Studio, 5170 Côte-Ste-Catherine. Tickets start at $18; Wed. Sept. 19 preview is pay-what-you-can; Mon. Sept. 24 is 2-for-1. Call the Box Office at 514 739-7944 or online at www.segalcentre.org.
