It is customary to designate as the "Trilogy Tudor" the three operas that Donizetti devoted to English queens - Anna Bolena (1830), Maria Stuarda (1834) and Roberto Devereux (1837) - a justified appellation (although this group is Donizetti abroad) to the extent of recurring characters, starting with Queen Elizabeth I, appear in three works. Inspired by Schiller's Mary Stuart Donizetti focuses on the very end of the life of the Queen of Scotland, captive for years of her rival. The passion of Queen Elizabeth to the Earl of Leicester, himself lovesick Mary, precipitating the tragedy. Censored the kingdom of Naples (to stage the execution of a queen!), Well received in Milan, Maria Stuarda struggle to win despite undeniable musical and dramatic qualities, as the show resumed at the Edinburgh Festival in 1967 who signed the modern revival of the work, through interpretation "historic" Leyla Gencer and Shirley Verrett.
