The Ringwald Opens THE SUBMISSION Tonight

By:

The new year at The Ringwald brings a new play to Michigan audiences! Opening tonight, January 10th for an exclusive four week engagement is Jeff Talbott's new play, The Submission, a fiercely funny and intelligent new comic drama about the words we use to describe each other - and the things we'll do to get what we want.

Please Note: The Submission is replacing The Boys in the Band, the previously announced show in this slot.

Danny has written a new play about an African American family trying to get out of the Projects, and it has just been selected for a preeminent play festival. Problem is: Danny, a young white playwright, submitted the work under a pen name in the hope of increasing its chances for production. So he hires Emilie, a black actress, to stand in for him as author. What starts as a terrible idea becomes more terrible as Danny drags Emilie, his boyfriend, and his best friend down a long and dirty path of lies and betrayal.

Jeff Talbott, a native of western Nebraska, has been a New York City-based actor since 1996, when he earned an MFA in acting from Yale School of Drama. A working actor and unproduced playwright, he penned For Nate and Molly and Tender, plays seen in the student Yale Cabaret. His recent plays include twelve twenty-five, about a man dealing with his father's Alzheimer's disease and the impact it has on his family of friends; and Elliot Yagovich, a dark workplace comedy about what may be brewing in the mind and heart of the co-worker in the cubicle next door. Under the title Festival Play, The Submission was a semi-finalist for the 2010 O'Neill Playwrights Conference and won the Laurents/Hatcher Award for Best New Play in 2011 and the Outer Critics Circle Award. The Submission will play from January 10th through February 3, 2014 at 8pm Friday, Saturday, and Monday nights with 3pm performances on Sunday afternoons. There will be a talkback following the production on Sunday, January 26th, facilitated by Jay Kaplan from the ACLU. Ticket prices are $20.00 for the Friday and Saturday performances, $15 for the Sunday matinees, and the Monday night performances are half off the normal ticket price at only $10 per seat. Tickets can be purchased at www.theRingwald.com or at the Ringwald box office, which opens 45 minutes before performances. Tickets can be purchased with cash or Visa/Mastercard at the door. The Ringwald opened their doors five years ago on May 11, 2007 with Fatal Attraction: A Greek Tragedy. Quickly, The Ringwald became a mainstay of Detroit's theatre community. Past Productions include: Trainspotting, Shining City, The Bad Seed, Killer Joe, Bug, Mercury Fur, and Silent Night of the Lambs. The Ringwald was named 2009 and 2012 Best Theatrical Troupe by Real Detroit and Best Place to See Local Theatre in 2010, 2011 and 2012 by the readers of Metro Times.
