Oakland Symphony Orchestra Kicks Off Performance Season on Oct. 2

At 3 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 2, the Oakland Symphony Orchestra (OSO), Oakland University's orchestra-in-residence, will give the first of its two fall 2016 concerts. The season opener will offer an exciting program including Tiento del primer tono y batalla imperial by Cristóbal Halffter; Concerto for Viola and Orchestra by William Walton with guest viola soloist Dr. Roman Kosarev; and Symphony No. 4 in E Minor, Op. 98 by Johannes Brahms.

The second concert, scheduled for 3 pm on Sunday, Nov. 6, will offer a program of 20th-century music including the Overture to Candide by Leonard Bernstein; Sea Blue Circuitry by Mason Bates; Suite from The Tenderland by Aaron Copland; and Piano Concerto in F by George Gershwin with piano soloist Dr. I-Chen Yeh.

The OSO has a proud tradition of excellence dating back to 1976 and it continues to provide Southeast Michigan with outstanding performances of the finest symphonic repertoire. The orchestra is under the direction of Professor Gregory Cunningham who is beginning his 20th year at Oakland University where he is also director of bands and conductor of the Oakland University Wind Symphony, and professor of orchestral/wind conducting.

Both concert are in Varner Recital Hall. Tickets are purchased separately for each performance. They are $20 general admission, or $10 for students.

Varner Recital Hall is located on the Oakland University campus at 371 Varner Drive. Maps of the campus are available at oakland.edu/map. Ample free parking will be available in lots 24 and 26.
