Magenta Giraffe Theatre Company of Detroit presents the world premiere of The Current, by playwright-in-residence Sean Paraventi (Redford), directed by Molly McMahon (Detroit). The show runs from November 12-December 4, 2010. Tickets are $15-$18, with pay-what-you-can tickets available to all performances other than opening night, which is half-price. Tickets may be reserved by phone at 313-408-7269 or at www.magentagiraffe.org.

This charming, funny and heartfelt play had its first reading at Magenta Giraffe's Second Annual Staged Reading Festival and was met with overwhelming enthusiasm. This is the first of local playwright Sean Paraventi's works to receive a full production. Magenta Giraffe is thrilled to announce that he has accepted a position as playwright-in-residence for the company. "I'm very excited to have The Current produced by Magenta Giraffe," says Paraventi. "I'm looking forward to working with them. I'm glad I can give the ladies of MGT a man's perspective and a play about five women."

In The Current, bride-to-be Mary and her friends go to see a psychic to kick off her bachelorette party. When the psychic begins to probe too deeply, the women question her ability and leave to celebrate elsewhere. As the evening progresses, though, the psychic's readings begin to reveal the women's insecurities and secrets, culminating in a startling reveal that could jeopardize their friendship. This play provides a fascinating look at honor, trust and friendship with breezy, natural dialogue and sharply etched characters that resonate with us all.

The cast includes Angie Kane Ferrante (Wyandotte), Kirsten Knisely (Dearborn), Frannie Shepherd-Bates (Royal Oak), Jaye Stellini (Detroit), and Jaclyn Strez (Detroit). Gwen Lindsay exhibits her scenic design; lighting by Neil Koivu; costumes by Lauren Montgomery.
