Grand Rapids Civic Theatre Engages Community for Avenue Q

By:

The Grand Rapids Civic Theatre and School of Theatre Arts has launched a crowdfunding campaign to invite the people of West Michigan to come together as an artistic sponsor for the upcoming musical, 'Avenue Q.'

While it is not uncommon for generous area businesses to serve in the role of sponsors, the Theatre is looking to engage the Community through this play. "Avenue Q is a story about a community coming together to show support and a 'we're all in this together' spirit so we felt this message would resonate as we rally the community around live theater," stated Nancy Brozek, Director of Development and Community Relations. "This campaign lets the community become more personally connected to this unique production'.

The Civic Theatre is hoping to raise $3,000 from the people of Grand Rapids and West Michigan during a 30-day run on the crowdfunding platform, RocketHub. The campaign will take place between March 27 - April 25. In achieving this $3,000 funding goal, all contributions will go to support production costs associated bringing the puppets to life and to be able to call the People of West Michigan the official Artistic Sponsor of the production.

For more details or to donate to the campaign kicking off this Friday, visit the RocketHub website http://www.rockethub.com/projects/55429-grand-rapids-civic-theatre-s-avenue-q-musical-become-a-show-sponsor

As a winner of the Tony "Triple Crown" for Best Musical, Best Score, and Best Book, Avenue Q is a laugh-out-loud musical that tells the timeless story of a recent college grad named Princeton who moves into a shabby New York apartment all the way out on Avenue Q. There, he meets Kate (the girl next door), Rod (the Republican), Trekkie (the internet sexpert), Sexy Lucy (need we say more?), and other colorful types who help Princeton finally discover his purpose in life. While the story is timeless certain elements are unique as the story is told through actors bringing puppets to life.

Avenue Q is not appropriate for children because of the adult subject matter. The Civic Theatre mission is to offer a diverse selection of arts entertainment, but not all productions may appeal to or be appropriate for every person or all ages. Patrons are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the performance in order to make informed decisions.

Great Theatre for the 14/15 continues with a perfect blend of theatre classics and new favorites. The Civic is proud to kick things off in September with the World Debut of an original work: The Boatwright. Mary Poppins takes the stage just in time for the Holidays. January brings the mystery, The Mousetrap to life, followed by the Rogers and Hammerstein masterpiece, South Pacific. Children will adore Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, NO Good, Very Bad Day in April. Making a Civic debut in June, Avenue Q, brings puppets to life and the season closes with Footloose and The Little Princess.
