DPTV is Taking 7,000 Students on a Virtual Field Trip to the Detroit Institute of Arts
What lies behind the surface of a 400-year-old sculpture? Is what you see on a painting real, or did the artist mean to draw something totally different? And, what about Infrared Reflectography-what does that exactly do?
Detroit Public Television (DPTV) is teaming up with the Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA) for a virtual field trip to take students and teachers from all over the country behind the scenes and into the restricted conservation area of the DIA to help them explore new ideas and dig deep under the surface of art and science. It is chemistry, physics, biology and geology sprinkled with "ferocious curiosity."
As of today, more 6,800 students 141 teachers have signed up to join the tour.
Designed for students in elementary and middle school, teachers will be able to watch a moderated version of the field trip on Wednesday, November 30, 2016 at 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. The videos, produced thanks to a partnership with the Detroit Institute of Arts, Wayne State University, the ISD leadership in Wayne, Oakland and Macomb and the State of Michigan, will also be available On-Demand afterward at http://dptv.org/diafieldtrip. Videos will feature an examination of a 400-year-old sculpture to learn about the pigments used on the painted surface; ways that chemistry and technology combine to discover hidden aspects in paintings, and much more.
Teachers will also be able to download lesson plans and activities to help expand the learning experience of their students. These resources will later be available on PBS Learning Media for educators worldwide to download and use in their classrooms.
In addition, the DPTV team will be on-site at West Bloomfield High School on November 30 at 1 p.m. for a Facebook Live event as students in four of Mr. Timothy Fox's classrooms watch and react to the video.
Don't miss this unique opportunity to engage students in STEAM and give them and their teachers unfettered access into one of Detroit's crown jewel. For more information and to follow the stream, visit http://dptv.org/diafieldtrip.
