New Theatre kicks of its 2007-2008 Main Season with the World Premiere Production of Likeness by David Caudle

Set in Colonial Boston, an idealistic young painter commissioned to create an idealized portrait of a tyrannical Loyalist's daughter finds there is more to painting this portrait than meets the eye.  Though loath to tell a lie with his brush, he desperately needs the gig.   His subject, meanwhile, believes herself beyond improvement.   Within that rectangle of canvas, an artist struggles to define his identity, and a girl struggles to protect hers, as the earliest rumblings of revolution rattle the studio walls.

Under the artistic direction of Ricky J. Martinez, New Theatre's 2007-2008 main season remains true to its mission to provide a forum for new works by American playwrights, often making their world premiere at the innovative theatre.  The upcoming season features four world premiere productions the first of which is by Miami playwright, David Caudle, author of the critically acclaimed Sunken Living Room which had its world premiere at New Theatre in 2006 as a co-production with New Orlean's Southern Rep.  New Theatre Artistic Director, Ricky J. Martinez will direct the cast which includes New Theatre veterans Bill Schwartz, Tara Vodihn and recent graduate of New Theatre's apprentice program, Matthew Leddy.  Making their New Theatre debut will be Sally Bondi, Vanessa Thompson and Scott McKinsey.

Returning to New Theatre will be Production Stage Manager Betsy Paull-Rick, Scenic Designer Jesse Dreikosen and the scenic construction crew, TLC Events Group.  Making their New Theatre debut is New York City's Lincoln Center Wardrobe Supervisor, Lynn Bowling and Hair and Wig Master, Lazaro Arencibia.

About the Playwright

David Caudle is a Miami native now living in New York and is thrilled to have his work premiere once again on the New Theatre stage after last year's The Sunken Living Room. (Carbonell Nominee for Best New Work; Winner, Southern New Plays Festival '05; Gold Medal Finalist-Pinter Review Prize for Drama '04, Finalist at the Lark's Playwrights Week '05; named Best Drama of '06 by the Miami Sun-Post.)  The co-production with Southern Rep was remounted in January for a highly praised production in New Orleans.  Another of his plays, Visiting Ours was developed in the Downstage Miami playwriting workshop and will have a reading October 1 at Primary Stages in New York .  David's one-act, Feet Of Clay (Samuel French Winner, Heidemann Award Finalist) is published by Samuel French in its 29th Edition of Festival Plays.   The short film version, directed by Carrie Preston, is currently making festival rounds.  With an MFA in Scenic Design from the University of Connecticut, David has painted scenery on and Off-Broadway, and painted costumes for several productions at Lincoln Center, where he works with the hugely talented Lynn Bowling and Lazaro Arencibia.
