Topol in 'Fiddler' - A Goose Bump Inducing Musical Miracle

By:

If you were not at the Broward Center last night or do not have tickets for this national tour of Topol in 'Fiddler On The Roof,' stop reading this review now and get your tickets at www.broadwayacrossamerica.com. This Fiddler blew me away and it has me thinking that 'Fiddler On The Roof' may actually be the greatest musical ever born.

Thank the theatrical Gods that this production is a recreation of the Jerome Robbins original. I can not think of any production of any musical anywhere that comes close to what Mr. Robbins accomplished here around forty five years ago. I shall not be presumptuous and foolish and pick apart any individual pieces of 'Fiddler.' It was established decades ago by writers greater than I that Robbins' staging of 'Fiddler' was groundbreaking and established a new form of musical theater. Robbins' staging is indeed amazing. It is funny, exciting, and exuberantly joyful. The things that this man thought of doing. How he moved the scenery. How he keeps punching us with emotional wallops. The tension that he makes us feel from his dance. There is genius on display at 'Fiddler' and you would be a fool to miss it. You must not miss it.

I fell madly in love with Topol last night. In my youth I saw the Great Zero Mostel in his revival in the 70s. That is a whole other story. I have seen Topol in the film of 'Fiddler' many times and I saw Topol in a national tour at the Gleason about twenty years ago. Around 70 years old, Topol delivered last night, a performance nothing short of mesmerizing. The man is apparently ageless.  He had the audience riveted to every move he made. His singing voice is so gorgeous that once heard it will not soon be forgotten. You will not believe the passion and humor Topol mixes with that voice from God. His is beyond an award winning performance. This is one for the ages.

There are reasons 'Fiddler' is considered one of the great classics in musical theater. Me, I am still in 'theatrical afterglow.' See 'Fiddler On The Roof ' now. See it twice if you can. Don't deny yourself the gift of Topol in the original Jerome Robbins production of 'Fiddler On The Roof.' Wow! It doesn't get any better than this.
