Is there a more perfect Broadway musical than Meredith Willson's The
Music Man? The play opens on the 4th of July, 1912, in River City, Iowa. Fast-
talking traveling salesman and con-artist Harold Hill goes from
small town to small town selling citizens on starting a "boy's
band," then extracts money from them with the promise that he'll
teach the kids to be musical prodigies. But things don't go as planned and Harold becomes the one thing he
fears the most: a respectable citizen!
