January promises to be a good month for classical music lovers as The Leipzig String Quartet brings Haydn's The Seven Last Words of Christ to the Squitieri Studio Theatre at the Phillips Center Sunday, January 24. This unique performance is followed later in the week with two performances by Haochen Zhang, the Thirteenth Gold Medalist of the Van Cliburn Competition on Thursday, January 28 and Friday, January 29. Limited seating is available for these performances.

Haochen Zhang
On June 7, 2009, four days after celebrating his nineteenth birthday, Haochen Zhang was awarded a Nancy Lee and Perry R. Bass Gold Medal at the Thirteenth Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. He also received three years of international concert engagements and a CD recording of his prizewinning performances on the Harmonia Mundi USA label. The youngest participant at the competition, Mr. Zhang has already begun to forge a reputation as a strong, energetic pianist with a sophisticated approach and musical depth far beyond his years.

Since its founding two decades ago, the Leipzig String Quartet has garnered the attention of international critics and audiences with its distinctive dark timbre and meticulously sculpted interpretations of a widely varied repertoire. Formed originally by the string principals of the renowned Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, the Quartet continues to uphold the principles of sound and integrity ascribed to this great orchestra. Called "one of the towering and most versatile quartets of our time" by the Neue Zuercher Zeitung and lauded by The New York Times for presenting "rich, mellow, unadulterated beauty" and a true "Leipzig sound," the Quartet is beyond doubt one of the world's great chamber ensembles.
