Palm Beach Photographic Centre to Host 16th Annual FOTOfusion

January 11-15, 2011 

Scheduled FOTOshoots Topics Include Lighting & Locations; Birds, Butterflies and Flowers; Plus Little Haiti, Little Havana, Naked Ladies, Polo & the Streets of West Palm Beach 

World Famous Photographers Include Carlo Allegri, Kevin Ames, Mary Calvert, Raymond Gehman, Amy Gulick, Vincent Ricardel, All Satterwhite, Michael Sharkey, Adam Stoltman, Vincent Versace & More


Fatima NeJame, president and chief executive officer of the world-renowned Palm Beach Photographic Centre (PBPC), announced that the 16th annual FOTOfusion (January 11-15, 2011) will offer more than 100 workshops, lectures, panel discussions, multimedia presentations, portfolio reviews, hands-on computer classes, demonstrations, and photo shoots taught by an impressive faculty of industry leaders and photographic giants. FOTOfusion bills itself as "where creativity and technology fuse," and it attracts hundreds of participants from around the globe. 

The impressive line-up of hands-on FOTOshoots and Guest Photographers scheduled for FOTOfusion 2011 will include: 

TUESDAY, January 11:

9 a.m. to Noon
Master Flower Photography
with Vincent Versace
When it comes to photographing portraits of flowers, learn the secrets of a master - how he sees and what he looks for in capturing the best pix.

9 a.m. to Noon
Take some of Cuba Home without leaving the Country:
Shoot the flavor of Miami's Little Havana
with Scott Mc Kiernan
Explore Little Havana's ‘Calle Ocho' and shoot in a neighborhood barbershop, cigar-rolling factory, and Cuban domino and chess players at their rattling best. Take in the exotic world of the Botanicas: exotic shops full of Afro-Cuban devotional potions and objects. End the shoot with a Cuban espresso, ‘Un Cafecito.' Scott has been on assignment on every continent except Antarctica for major top magazines over the last three decades, but every location is like the first time for him, as he lives to explore and tell the story of each amazing place and people.

1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Lighting and Photographing the Female Figure
with Kevin Ames
The nude figure is one of the classic themes of painting, sculpture and photography. Award winning photographer Kevin Ames will guide participants in creating memorable photographic studies of the female form in the Palm Beach Photographic Center's studio. The experience begins with an introduction to figure photography that includes invaluable techniques for interacting with models, posing, props, styling and lighting techniques. Participants are guided through the process of making their own photographic figure studies. Attendees will learn how to shape the figure with light, experience first hand working with and posing nude models as well as how to express their vision by creating enchanting photographs of the nude. Participants will want to bring their camera, lenses, extra memory cards, a tripod and the expectation of making truly wonderful photographs of a classic subject, the nude female form.


WEDNESDAY, January 12:

8:30 to 11:30 a.m.
Close-ups at Unbelievable Acres
with Rob Sheppard
"Unbelievable Acres" is literally a jungle, created by horticulturist Gene Joyner 35 years ago, and its flowering plants, spiders, owls and many other critters are great subjects for close-ups. Rob will guide participating photographers through this 2-acre rain forest in the middle of Palm Beach County and teach creative ways of making dramatic images of nature.

10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Guerilla Lighting
with Carlo Allegri
Learn how to quickly use lighting to make photos go from drab to fab. Celebrated celebrity portrait photographer Allegri will introduce the basics of location lighting, usage of flash use, simple posing techniques and tricks to turn a guerilla assignment into looking like a large budget magazine shoot.

2 p.m. to 5 p.m.
The Digital Zone System
with Gordon Brown, Thomas McCartney, Steve Nestler and Richard Zakia
Steve Nestler will lead this field trip at a local nature preserve, and will build upon the digital principles explained previously in seminar 105. Participants will receive guided instruction on setting their cameras for optimal results. Using RAW and JPG formats, the histogram will be central, with Individual image and camera-setting advice available on the spot. Seminar 105 is a pre-requisite for this FOTOshoot, which is limited to 10 participants. There will be a follow-up critique session on Thursday from 12:30 to 1:30 pm. Here, the instructors will project and review images and give individual feedback on camera operation, composition, and the Digital Zone System.  

4 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Location Lighting
with Michael Sharkey.Sharkey has shot hundreds of subjects for more than 30 national and international magazines over the past decade utilizing artificial light, most often strobes. Shooting on location, it is important to have a firm grasp on how light behaves: how it moves, bends, reflects, dissipates, etc. in order to maintain control over the final image. Learn how to effectively utilize strobes and also how to properly balance ambient light in conjunction with strobes to achieve the highest possible image quality.

THURSDAY, January 13:

6 to 9:30 a.m.
Photograph the Birds of Wakodahatchee
with Amy Gulick
Join acclaimed wildlife photographer Amy Gulick to explore the Wakodahatchee Wetlands, home to more than 140 species of birds including herons, ibises, and wood storks. Bring your camera, sturdy tripod, and longest lens available in order to photograph small subjects from a distance comfortable for the wildlife.

4 to 6 p.m.
Lighting Portraits on Location
with Louie Palu
Get the lowdown on how to light on location from Louie, an award winning, internationally published photojournalist. Profit from his many years of experience in the field and his clear and concise demonstrations in this hands-on photo shoot.

FRIDAY, January 14:

1:30 to 5 p.m.
Shoot Bountiful Beauties At Butterfly World
with Raymond Gehman
Join National Geographic photographer Raymond Gehman at South Florida's famous Butterfly World in Pompano Beach as he shares his expertise with you at this extraordinary world famous 10-acre site. Gehman will teach how to put the natural light to best use, as well as when to throw in some easy fill-flash. Capture some fantastic butterfly pictures and have a great time while doing it.

2 to 4 p.m.
Making Effective Daylight Pictures
with Vincent Ricardel
Daylight can be harsh, especially at mid-day. This workshop will introduce practices and methods of making effective daylight images. There will be an overview and demonstration of tools such as light modifiers, reflectors, the light meter and portable strobes. Special emphasis will be made using the existing environment and daylight conditions. This is an intermediate level class and ideal those who wish to explore location photography. Prior knowledge of lighting is recommended.

SATURDAY, January 15:

8 to 10 a.m.
Environmental Portraiture
with Al Satterwhite
Working with this internationally renowned photographer in a picturesque South Florida location, participants will discover that environmental portraiture does not have to be a laborious affair. Learn how to show both the subject and their personality, and how to "read" the light to best advantage and capture that special moment.

10:30 a.m. to 12:30 pm
The Streets of West Palm Beach
with Mary Calvert
Roam the streets of picturesque West Palm Beach with award-winning world-class photojournalist and documentary photographer Mary Calvert. Learn first hand how to put together a story in the field, cope with challenges, and develop a visual style and photographic sensitivity.

2 to 5 p.m.
Document Delray Beach's Little Haiti
with Carlo Allegri
Award winning photographer Allegri will show how to make images both stylish and innovative photographing the daily life of people and their environment. Open your mind and eye in this hands-on FOTOshoot in Delray Beach's Haitian community.

11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Sports Photography Shoot
with Adam Stoltman
Join this veteran sports photographer and former deputy picture editor for Sports Illustrated Magazine on a sports shoot in the Palm Beach area. Learn to anticipate the action, hone reflexes and sharpen skills at a real event - a polo match in Wellington. This outing will include on site instruction, the opportunity to cover the action first hand, and a review and discussion of the images produced. Benefit from being at a live event and sharing the perspective a 30-year veteran who has covered 10 Olympic Games and countless other sporting events around the world.

Another highlight of the upcoming FOTOfusion will be the presentation of the prestigious FOTOmentor Award to Robert Glenn Ketchum, a longtime friend and supporter of the Palm Beach Photographic Centre. In turn, Ketchum will present PBPC's Rising Star Award to Miguel Ángel de la Cueva, a young Fellow from the International League of Conservation Photographers who is doing remarkable work in Mexico and Baja.

PBPC will honor Ketchum several times during the weeklong festival:
+ At a reception open to FOTOfusion participants on January 11
+ At an awards dinner on January 12
+ At a reception open to the general public on January 13.
