Broward County has Phenomenal Arts Teachers

It's Time to Celebrate!

J.P. Taravella High School's Music Teacher Neil Jenkins

is named 2010 Broward County Arts Teacher of the Year

Broward County Cultural Division announced Neil Jenkins, music teacher, J.P. Taravella High School, as the 25th annual Broward County Arts Teacher of the Year (ATOY). A ceremony to recognize this award will be held on Wednesday, October 20, 2010, 6:00 p.m., at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts.

It was an exhilarating moment at an arts-inspired event at Barnes & Noble in April, when three finalists for the 2010 Broward County Arts Teacher of the Year stood poised to hear the announcement about which would be the winner. Surrounded by friends, supporters, local artists and customers of the national bookstore, the winning moment was filled with anticipation and honor. The moment was even more memorable in light of the fact, that Neil Jenkins is now the second winner two years in a row from J.P. Taveralla High School- Susan Anderson, visual arts teacher, J.P. Taravella High School was the honored winner last year.

Neil Jenkins has been a band director since 1968. He holds a Master of Arts in Education (music) and a Bachelor of Arts in Education (Music) from the University of South Florida in Tampa and is certified in Music Education, K - 12.

Jenkins is hailed as one of the top music educators in the county, and his many accomplishments include inductee to the Florida Bandmasters Association Hall of Fame (2007); winner of the "Oliver Hobbs Award" from the Florida Bandmasters Association (2007); and receiving the "Legion of Honor award by the John Philip Sousa Foundation (2006). He was also included in the "Who's Who Among America's Teachers" on several occasions; currently serves on the Florida Bandmasters Association as the State Conference Facilitator and teaches as an Adjunct Professor at Broward College, directing the Broward Symphonic Band and serving as a member of the Florida Music Assessment Task Force.

The Broward County Arts Teacher of the Year Award was created by the Broward County Cultural Division in 1985 to annually recognize the most outstanding arts teacher in Broward County schools. Teachers, whose primary assignment is in an arts discipline, including dance, drama, music, visual arts and media arts, are eligible to apply or be nominated. The selection panel is composed of members of the Broward Cultural Council's Arts Education Committee. Nominees submit an application, audio/visual exhibits, and are observed in the classroom by members of the selection panel. In addition to the ceremony and reception at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts, the winner receives a cash stipend, a scholarship to Nova Southeastern University, a Tiffany crystal apple, an inscribed brick on Riverwalk, and an assortment of gifts from cultural organizations and businesses.
