HistoryMiami Hosts Family Fun Day: Peruvian Arts Today

By: Sep. 14, 2013

Experience Peruvian culture! Enjoy interactive presentations of Afro-Peruvian music and dance with Perú Expresión. Sample Peruvian food and try various craft activities at HistoryMiami's monthly Family Fun Day.

Founded by a collection of local Peruvian performers in 1999, dance and music ensemblePerú Expresión presents various expressive traditions, including those practiced by Afro-Peruvians. The group is led by percussionist Johnny Mora, an expert cajón (box drum) player, and dancer Maribel Egoavil. Both have performed with world-renowned troupe Perú Negro and with other Peruvian music stars, including Eva Ayllón.

The Heritage Spotlight series, an artist-in-residence program, is presented by the HistoryMiami South Florida Folklife Center. The program highlights Miami-area traditional artists and cultures. Each year, the series showcases three individual artists or ensembles and their traditions. Participating artists share their art through public events, school programs, and multimedia products.

The Heritage Spotlight series is sponsored by the Knight Foundation, the Institute of Museum & Library Services, and the National Endowment for the Arts with the support of Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs, the Cultural Affairs Council, the Mayor and the Board of County Commissioners.
