City Theatre and the Broward Center for the Performing Arts to Present STANDING ON CEREMONY, 6/21-24

By:

City Theatre and the Broward Center for the Performing Arts will present the South Florida premiere of Standing on Ceremony: The Gay Marriage Plays Thursday, June 21 to Sunday, June 24 in the Amaturo Theater at the Broward Center.

Written by an A-list lineup of writers with two Pulitzer Prizes, four Obies, one Emmy® and three Tony® nominations, Standing on Ceremony: The Gay Marriage Plays was conceived by Brian Shnipper and began as a series of benefit events in Los Angeles before an Off-Broadway engagement last fall.

Tickets are priced from $35 to $45, which includes a post-show wedding reception complete with music and wedding cake.

The American writers who created an evening that is at once as insightful and stirring as it is funny and heartwarming are Emmy Award® winner Mo Gaffney, Heideman Award winner Jordan Harrison, Edgar Award winner Jeffrey Hatcher, Pulitzer Prize winner and Tony Award® nominee Neil LaBute, Sundance Jury Prize winner Wendy MacLeod, Obie Award winner José Rivera, Obie and Outer Critics Circle Award winner Paul Rudnick, Tony Award® nominee Moisés Kaufman and Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award® winner Doug Wright.

The cast for the short, witty, warm and occasionally wacky works includes Bryan Batt and Bruce Vilanch as well as audience favorites from past City Theatre Summer Shorts Festivals: Steve Trovillion, Elizabeth Dimon and Elena Garcia. The production is directed by City Theatre’s Artistic Director John Manzelli.

Batt, who is most recently known for his two-time Screen Actors Guild Award winning performance as “Salvatore Romano” in AMC’s Mad Men, also appeared on Broadway in the 2005 revival of La Cage Aux Folles, Beauty and the Beast, Seussical The Musical, Sunset Blvd, 2Saturday Night Fever, The Scarlet Pimpernel, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Starlight Express and Cats.

Vilanch spent two years as Edna Turnblad in Hairspray on Broadway and on tour in addition to his Off-Broadway show Almost Famous. He is also one of the most sought-after comedy writers in Hollywood and his career was documented in the film Get Bruce!, released by Miramax and available on Buena Vista Home Video.

A portion of all proceeds will be donated to Equality Florida, continuing a practice established in the original production of contributing show proceeds to an organization that promotes the issue of marriage equality. Equality Florida is the largest civil rights organization in Florida dedicated to ending discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity.

Performance Schedule: Thursday and Friday, June 21 and 22 at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, June 23 at 7 and 10 p.m. and Sunday, June 24 at 3 p.m.

Tickets and group discounts are available through the Broward Center AutoNation box office at (954) 462-0222 or online at www.BrowardCenter.org.

The Broward Center for the Performing Arts is located in the Riverwalk Arts & Entertainment District at 201 SW Fifth Avenue in Fort Lauderdale.

Harbor Beach Marriott Resort & Spa, TAM Airlines and Sun-Sentinel are proud sponsors of the Broward Center.
