Rodolfo Anaya’s Rosa Linda is a beautiful, compelling story of love, lust, betrayal and redemption, inspired by the old Spanish-Mexican corrido “Delgadina” and set on a northern New Mexico ranch at the turn of the 20th century. The law of tradition, imposed by the patriarch Agustín, clashes with his daughter Rosa Linda’s desire for emancipation as the characters are caught between conventional customs and the new ways of life that are beginning to emerge. Adding to the volatile family drama, the gypsies come to celebrate their fiestas with song and dance, along with their secrets and prophecies of the future.
Will Rosa Linda be forced to marry without love? Why is her father so jealous and controlling? And what are the secrets the Gypsies guard? Anaya’s classic stories of New Mexico return to the NHCC stage in the world premiere of Rosa Linda, a work begun over 30 years ago and now presented in collaboration with The Vortex Theatre and the team that brought Bless Me, Ultima to the stage in 2010.
