The Best of Enemies is based on the true story of hatred turned to lasting friendship between Ann Atwater, a black civil rights activist, and C.P. Ellis, an exalted cyclops of the KKK. During the 1971 court-ordered desegregation of schools in Durham, N. C. , a mediator sent by the Department of Education gets Atwater and Ellis to co-chair a committee formed to debate the desegregation. Forced to face each other and confront the prejudice in their hearts, they ultimately discover the real enemy they share.
