Acorn Productions' Naked Shakespeare ensemble presents Pericles, Prince of Tyre at Space Gallery, 538 Congress St., Portland from Thursday March 28th through Saturday March 30th at 7:00pm and Sunday March 31st at 3pm.

Never has a man been so beset by storms and tumultuous circumstance as our hero Pericles. So says medieval poet John Gower, who returns from the grave briefly to lead us through this cautionary and fantastical account of heroes and villains, adventure and tragedy, love, loss and redemption. This fairy-tale is Shakespeare as you have not seen him before - gritty, dangerous, yet lovely and touching all at once - you might say...shades of Into the Woods, but way before its time.

Pericles offers our audience a Shakespeare that is refreshingly unexpected. While keeping true to our spare method, we are also expanding our aesthetic by adding dance, live music and puppetry which adds a more full-bodied and sensory experience of the play. As this play is essentially a fantastical fairytale, it lends itself well to these facets, and utilizes the additional skills of our ensemble beyond simple delivery of the text. And, we hope, will breathe new life into the audience's experience of Shakespeare.
